New details have come to light in the horrific single-engine turboprop plane crash in Butte, Montana on Sunday. All 14 people on board died in the fiery crash; many on board were children. The focus of what caused the crash has now shifted to ice on the wings, but the first thought was that the plane went down due to being overloaded with too many passengers. The plane was designed to carry only 10 passengers. The plane nose dived into a cemetery just 500 feet short of the airport’s runway. Because cockpit voice recorders and flight data recorders are not required in smaller aircraft, finding the cause of the crash will be much more difficult than it would be with a larger plane.

While the plane was descending to land at the Bert Mooney Airport, it passed through a layer of air that was conducive to icing because of the below freezing temperatures and 100% humidity. This scenario is being compared to a similar icing condition that existed when the Continental Airlines twin-engine turboprop went down in Buffalo last month, killing fifty people.
