The most common childhood physical disability, cerebral palsy is caused by damage to the brain during gestation or early infancy, and is marked by motor disorders, which may be accompanied by seizures, learning and mood disorders, and other symptoms.

Cerebral palsy is not a single disorder, but general term used to describe a variety of different conditions. The three most common categories of cerebral palsy are spastic, dyskinetic, and ataxic, depending on the area of the brain that is affected. These types of cerebral palsy are not mutually exclusive, however, so many sufferers may present with more than one type of cerebral palsy.

While many cases of cerebral palsy are the result of natural causes, in some cases, it can be caused by lack of appropriate medical care during childbirth and neonatal treatment.

Cerebral palsy in infants can be attributed to failure to recognize and treat certain problems during the childbirth process, including seizures, prolapsed umbilical cord (causing the brain to be deprived of oxygen), and other instances of fetal distress and injury. After childbirth, failure to diagnose and treat such conditions are jaundice and meningitis in a timely manner can also cause cerebral palsy.
