What are Cox-2 inhibitors?
Cox-2 inhibitors are a popular pain management option prescribed primarily for arthritis patients in the US. A fairly new category of pain medication, Cox-2 inhibitors work by blocking certain types of enzymes.
Traditional over the counter pain medications generally belong to the category of NSAIDs, or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. These medications work by inhibiting two types of enzymes: Cox-1 and Cox-2. However, because Cox-1 enzymes protect the lining of the stomach, these NSAIDs frequently cause stomach problems, particularly for frequent users.
Problems with Cox-2 inhibitors
Cox-2 inhibitors were designed to eliminate these stomach problems, by leaving the Cox-1 enzymes at their normal levels, and inhibiting only the Cox-2. Unfortunately, this can frequently cause serious imbalances in the body's enzyme levels, which in turn affects the blood's clotting ability. This can lead to very serious and even fatal health problems, including strokes and heart attacks.
Drug company liability
Many of the drug companies that manufactured and marketed Cox-2 inhibitors have been accused of ignoring and even hiding study data that showed how dangerous these drugs could really be.
The drug Vioxx, manufactured by pharmaceutical manufacturer Merck, alone was estimated to have been responsible for 88,000 heart attacks-38,000 of them fatal-in only five years on the US market.
While less widely prescribed than Vioxx, other Cox-2 inhibitors, such as Bextra and Celebrex, have had similarly alarming effects.
